Kindergarten: In kindergarten, they learn a lot about keeping the beat steady and learning how to use their singing voice.
1st Grade: In first grade, students will play a greater variety of instruments, utilizing the skills they developed in kindergarten to play the steady beat.
2nd Grade: By second grade, students can read rhythms that use quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests. They will incorporate these notes to play rhythms on classroom instruments.
3rd Grade: In third grade, students begin reading music on the treble clef staff to prepare to play recorders.
4th Grade: An important skill 4th graders learn is playing the soprano recorder. Students will become more proficient at reading music and playing many instruments.
5th Grade: Students will utilize technology to compose songs, while continuing to play recorder. Students fine tune their music reading skills, as well as playing intricate rhythms on African drums.
